Description
This is a circa 1889-1890 Boston International Maritime Exhibition Vice President badge and a bronze medallion. This exhibition was the first of its kind, and was envisioned only months before it actually took place. The event's organizers aimed to bring together people of all maritime-related pursuits for the exchange of ideas and products. Originally slated to be held at New York's Madison Square Garden, the exhibition needed a sudden venue change after demolition of the Garden was announced in mid-July (the exhibition was originally scheduled for September). Moved to the new, spacious building owned by the Massachusetts' Charitable Mechanics' Association in Boston, a group whose first chairman had been Paul Revere, the Maritime Exhibition rescheduled to November 1889 and lasted through the 4th day of the next year. The large badge has two bars with an ornate anchor hanging below. The medallion shows the large complex where the event took place on its front and a clipper ship on reverse.
