Description
Great, 1880's - 1890's, Old West "Stock" Deputy Sheriff circle cut out star shield badge by Quint. Much like other early Eastern badge makers Tower & Lyons, Quint (founded in 1849) badges also found their way out West where manufacturing was almost non-existent. This example is a huge badge you could easily spot across town at dusk, let alone at high noon - It is in stamped nickel and reads: "DEPUTY SHERIFF" on the front in black detail with brass findings on reverse that feature an early "Flat Tongue Type" "C" catch.
These badges came out of an old collection put together by a collector from Kansas, now deceased. As the bulk of his collection was Kansas and Colorado, it can be safely assumed that these badges were indeed worn in the Old West of their particular vintage, although I do not know exactly where any were used or collected. Please see links below for other badges from this collection.
