Description
This is a World War II United States Marine Corps VMF-112 and VMF-331 grouping including a gilt sterling silver pilot wing, Naval Aviator Certificate (pilot license), dog tag and insignia for 1st Lieutenant Frederick C. (Crockett) Hawkes. Hawkes was killed in action April 23, 1944 off Kwajalein, an atoll among the Marshall Islands. He was flying a Vought F4U Corsair on his fateful last mission. His pilot license was issued from US Naval Air Station at Corpus Christi, Texas on March 20, 194His dog tag is T-dated July 194Most of the insignia, as well as the wing, are made by H&H Imperial and are hallmarked.
VINTAGE:Circa World War II.
SIZE:Wing: approximately 7/8" in height by 2-3/4" in width;: pilot license: 5-3/4" by 4-5/16" (when open); large EGA: 1-11/16" by 1-3/4"; dog tag: 1-1/2" by 1-1/4"; other items are of various sizes.
CONSTRUCTION / MATERIALS:Wing: gilt sterling silver; other items are of expected materials. ATTACHMENTS: Wing: horizontal pin with come-under locking swivel catch; buttons: cotter pins.
MARKINGS:Wing: H&H eagle maker mark STER + 1/20 10K; large EGA: H&H Imperial eagle maker mark; small EGAs and bars: STER H&H Imperial eagle maker mark; buttons: HILLBORN- HAMBURGER INC. THE VIKING NEW YORK.
