ARTIFACT:
WWII United States Coast Guard SPARS (women reserves) collar insignia worn by officers and enlisted personnel. The insignia is in the shape of a disc with crossed anchors behind and the center features a US Shield in nice relief detail and surrounding it reads: "SEMPER PARATUS" the outer ring reads: "UNITED STATES COAST GUARD 1790" in embossed lettering. SPARS is a play on the Coast Guard motto: Semper Paratus - Always Ready - Enlistment began during WWII, the women's enlistment allowed men to leave positions stateside to fight overseas.
