ARTIFACT:
WWII A-2 jacket as worn in Korean War by Col. Howard N. Tanner of the 36th Fighter Squadron. Col. Tanner attended West Point, served in WWII, the Korean War, and served a voluntary two years in the Vietnam War. During his 31 years of military service, he flew many different aircraft and at one point was an instructor, teaching pilots to fly the P- 39, P-40, and the P-47. During the Korean War, Col. Tanner was the first pilot to damage a Russian MiG. His service medals include the Distinguished Flying Cross with Bronze Star, the Air Medal with 10 Oak Leaf Cluster, and Commendation Ribbons from the Army and Air Force. After returning from conflict Col. Tanner taught aerospace studies at the Pentagon. The A-2 features a 36th Fighter Squadron embroidered patch and above, a leather name tag reading: "H. N. TANNER". There is evidence of a faded painted shoulder patch (as shown in photo). The inside of the jacket features a Korean War Era blood chit displaying four flags and three languages, Korean, Chinese, and Japanese. http://www.vvdailypress.com/article/20141001/NEWS/141009993?template=printart
