This beautiful, early, well made badge is from Elberton County Georgia, the county seat of Elbert County. It most likely dates from the 1880s, but could be a little earlier, or later. Southern badges of this era are extremely hard to find.
This somewhat ornate badge might be the first badge worn by an organized Police Department in the city, as its design is still used today in some public affairs situations: https://wsgcradio.com/f/elberton-police-reports
The heavy Nickel Plated Nickel construction, and long tube catch, point towards manufacture by the New York maker S. A. French, but the badge is unmarked. The badge has seen a good amount of wear, but still retains most of the old jewelers black in the lettering.
Circa 1880s.
