Description
Very late WWII Waffen-SS Croatian Volunteer Sleeve Shield Type II, Straight Shield, which shows a red and white checkered coat of arms. In the 1940's the German Army and Waffen-SS had large numbers of foreign volunteers coming from across Europe, by far the strongest foreign volunteer contingent. Germans authorized and issued national insignia produced at Dachau Labor Camp to be worn on Werhmacht uniforms and was never used because the war ended before it was issued. Many of the volunteer groups wore their own home made insignia to distinguish nationality, German regulations prohibited this, but it was not often enforced. This Croatian Shield was issued and worn by volunteers in the "13th SS Mountain Division Handschar".
