Description

ARTIFACT:

This is a unique English-made World War II United States Army 119th Infantry "Ghost" Division shoulder patch that has been removed from a uniform. The 119th was an imaginary invasion force created as part of "Operation Fortitude" during the summer of 194The objective was to put Germans on the wrong track, making it seem like the 119th was going to land at Pas de Calais for D-Day rather than at the shores of Normandy. Obviously some enterprising tailor made at least one of these for a member of the deception unit. The patch is black wool with flames embroidered in different hues of brown with a muslin backing.
