Description
Unique WWI souvenir from France, Arts & Crafts hair receiver. The souvenir is beautifully painted and glazed in earthy green, brown, and blue tones. The lid reads: "SOUVENIR DE FRANCE 1918". The center features a round opening surrounded by an embossed star embellishment and light blue glaze details. The bottom of the hair receiver shows a nice maker's mark and reads: "MEHUN s/r YEVRE 1918" to denote the souvenir was made by a potter in Mehun-sur-Y??vre. Hair receivers were mostly used in the Victorian era and were found on vanity and dressing tables. Their purpose was to collect hair from brushes/combs for the purpose of recycling. The hair was commonly used as stuffing in bags or to fill out women's hairstyles.
