This is THE Chief' badge of "America's Sherlock Holmes": William J. Burns, of his agency: the William J. Burns Detective Agency.
Burns became a national figure between working for the Secret Service, the Bureau of Investigation, heading up his own detective agency and finding time on the side to pen "true crime" stories.
Burns is particularly famous for his investigation and exoneration of Leo Frank, a northerner accused of murdering one of his young female factory workers in Georgia.
The badge reads CHIEF WM. J. BURNS DETECTIVE AGENCY W.J.B.
VINTAGE:
Circa 1920s.
SIZE:Approximately 2-3/8" in height and 1-11/16" in width.
CONSTRUCTION / MATERIALS:Gold-plated brass with painted lettering.
ATTACHMENT:Vertical kick pin with forked locking catch.
