Description

ARTIFACT:

This is a matched pair of bullion Caterpillar Club and Winged Boot patches made in the United Kingdom. Begun in 1941 by the Royal Air Force and later adopted by the United States 8th Air Force, the "Winged Boot" honor was given to airmen who had evaded capture and "walked home". The "Caterpillar Club" is a designation given to those servicemen who had successfully bailed out of a compromised aircraft by using a parachute.

VINTAGE:

Circa World War II.

SIZE:

Boot: approximately 1-3/8" in height and 1-3/4" in width; caterpillar: approximately 5/8" in height and 1-5/16" in width.

CONSTRUCTION / MATERIALS:

Wool felt embroidered with bullion and cotton/silk threads and cotton backing.

CONDITION:

8- (Very Fine-Excellent): The patches have light wear and light to medium tarnish on the bullion.
