Description
Scarce 1900's 1910's Illinois State Department of Constabulary Special Constable badge, state sanctioned "loose" predecessor to Illinois State Police. The center shows an eagle, wings spread clutching a US Shield in its talons and a scroll in its beak. The top of the badge is numbered: "559" and surrounding the center reads: "DEPARTMENT OF CONSTABULARY SPECIAL CONSTABLE S.S.P.C. A.H.A.T." State Society for the Prevention of Cruelty and Apprehension of Horse and Automobile Thieves a maker's mark on the reverse reads: "S.D.CHILDS & CO. ENGRAVERS CHICAGO"
