ARTIFACT:
This is a rare WWII US Army Provost Marshal General Investigations Division badge. The purpose of this division is to felony crimes and serious violations of military law within the United States Army. This badge is a sort of predecessor to the modern CID (Criminal Investigation Division), which had existed before, but had been going into a decline around the time of World War II. The reason behind the decline of the CID was the growing size of the army and the increased crime rate, whereas the CID did not have enough trained personnel to conduct correct investigations. The Office of the Provost Marshal of the time was tasked with providing the necessary staff for supervision and reestablishment of the Criminal Investigation Department.
