ARTIFACT: This is a Rare World War II SAAF South African Air Force 60 squadron Photo Recon Squadron Badge.  The badge shows an eagle within a crowned wreath and reads SAAF S.A.L.M. (SUID AFRIKAANSE LUG MAG, Afrikaans for South African Air Force).

60 Squadron SAAF is a squadron of the South African Air Force. It is a transport, aerial refuelling and EW(electronic warfare)/ELINT(electronic intelligence) squadron. It was first formed at Nairobi in December 1940.

In 1943 the 60th Squadron was a part of the North African Photo Reconnaissance Wing, which later became the Mediterranean Allied Photo Reconnaissance Wing. In several flights during 1944 Mosquitos took many of the later discussed pictures of the Auschwitz-Birkenau camps, in which the Holocaust was visible but was not recognized.

VINTAGE: World War II.

SIZE: Approximately 1-1/4" in height x 13/16" in width.

MATERIALS / CONSTRUCTION: Bronze with blue, white, black, and red enamel.

ATTACHMENT: Vertical pin with c type catch

CONDITION: 8+ (Excellent): The badge shows little wear, and tarnish, and much of the enamel detail remains intact. Overall, it is in excellent condition.
