ARTIFACT: This is a circa 1950s USS Growler SSG-577 Japanese-made patch. The patch shows a huge fist holding an aircraft in front of a mushroom cloud. What makes Growler and her sister boat, the Grayback, unusual was her nuclear armament, deployed on a conventional (non-nuclear powered) diesel-electric submarine. Her mission was to provide nuclear deterrent capability off the Pacific Coast of the Soviet Union during peak years of the Cold War, from 1958 to 1964, using the Regulus I Cruise Missile.

VINTAGE: Circa late 1950's.

SIZE: About 4" in width by 5-3/16" in height.

MATERIALS / CONSTRUCTION: Fully embroidered with cotton/poly/silk embroidery thread.

ATTACHMENT: To be sewn onto garment.

MARKINGS: None.

ITEM NOTES: This is from a large collection which we will be listing more of over the next few months. MIJX05 LCJJX05/08

CONDITION: 7- (Very Fine&emdash;): The patch has some moderate wear.

GUARANTEE: As with all my artifacts, this piece is guaranteed to be original, as described.
