ARTIFACT:
This is a rare late 1930s French Air Force non-commissioned officer pilot dagger with a portepee, or sword knot. The dagger and all its components have a squared-off design, including the pommel. The bright blade bears a maker mark. The dagger comes in its original gilt brass and dark blue or black leather scabbard with simple squared bands at the rings. The grip is either celluloid or painted wood with brass.
VINTAGE:
Circa late 1930s.
SIZE:
Approximately 14-3/8" in length and 2-7/8" in width (at guard); blade only: 10-1/8" in length (including ricasso) and 5/8" in width; scabbard only: approximately 11-1/4" in length and 1" in width; about 16-1/2" total length (while in scabbard).
MATERIALS / CONSTRUCTION:
Steel blade, celluloid (or painted wood) grip, gilt brass, rayon/cotton/nylon knot; gilt brass, leather-wrapped wood scabbard.
ATTACHMENT:
Rings on scabbard, U-hook for sword knot.
