ARTIFACT:
This is a rare lapel badge for the 1940 Olympics Games (XII Olympiad), which was canceled because of World War II. It seems these games were doomed from the start. Initially Japan was to be the host, but because of their involvement in the Second Sino-Japanese War, funding the event soon exceeded their dwindling means. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) revoked their host status in 1938, seemingly more due to financial concerns than ideological issues (Credit: Historical Dictionary of Modern Olympic Movement). The privilege was in turn awarded to Finland, but with the start of World War II in 1939, the Games were scrapped. The badge is nicely enameled with the Finnish flag enameled at the center and reads SUOMI VOITTOON (Finland to Victory). This badge is a pin-back style.
