Description
This is a rare circa 1900 "Old West" police badge from Ponca, Nebraska. Established by in 1856 by a small party, including the uncle of Kit Carson, Ponca was named for the indigenous tribe that occupied the area. The Missouri River port community became the seat of the fledgling Dixon County only two years later, and after the Civil War became an important crossroads as well as destination thanks to its steamboat and stagecoach as well as railway access. Though most of Ponca's "roaring Western town" image was probably fading by the time this badge saw service, this is still a great addition to any Western Lawman badge collection. A large nickel-plated copper badge (with copper numbers) from a South Dakota border town with a great look. The shield-shaped badge is numbered 12 at center.
