Description

ARTIFACT:

This is a rare 1946 first edition of "AmericanThe Story of the 442nd Combat Team" by Orville C. Shirey. The book covers the World War II actions of the United States Army 442nd Regimental Combat Team, a unit made up exclusively of volunteers who were first-generation Americans born to Japanese immigrants. Activated February 1, 1943 against a backdrop of general national resentment toward all things Japanese, the 442nd was comprised of members from the 442nd Infantry Regiment, the 522nd Field Artillery Battalion and the 232nd Engineer Combat Company. The team fought predominantly in Germany, France and Italy. The hardcover book is full of black and white photographs and illustrations, as well as campaign maps in color. Relative to its length of service and team size, the 442nd set a record for sheer number of decorations received, earning it the nickname "Purple Heart Battalion".
