Description
This is a nice World War II United States Army paratrooper wings in sterling silver, pinned to a mothed but original 505th Airborne, PIR (Parachute Infantry Regiment) oval. The 505th made their first combat jump over Sicily, which at the time was the first group (regimental) jump ever made. The ovals were referred to by the men as "background trimmings".
VINTAGE:Circa World War II.
SIZE:Wings: approximately 3/4" in height by 1-1/2" in width; oval: approximately 1-1/8" in height by 2" in width.
CONSTRUCTION / MATERIALS:Sterling silver; wool felt embroidered in cotton thread, mesh backing.
ATTACHMENT:Horizontal pin with come-under locking swivel catch.
MARKINGS:STERLING.

CONDITION:The wings have light wear and tarnish (8-: Very Fine-Excellent); oval is mothed (5+:Fine-).
