ARTIFACT: This is an Incredibly Rare circa 1960 Nye County Nevada MERCURY DIVISION Deputy Sheriff Badge # 28 by Entenmann worn at the NEVADA TEST SITE!! 

The Nevada Test Site (now officially renamed the Nevada National Security Site) is a 1,360-square-mile reservation located in southeastern Nye County, Nevada, about 65 miles northwest of Las Vegas. Established in 1950 by President Harry S. Truman, it served as the primary continental testing location for American nuclear weapons during the Cold War. Between 1951 and 1992, the site hosted 928 nuclear explosive tests, including 99 atmospheric detonations and hundreds of underground tests.

This badge was worn by the Law Enforcement for the town within the Nevada Test Site where employees lived.

Nye County Mercury Division badge #24 circa 1951 (this is erroneous: his badge shown, #24, is from the same period as my badge #28, circa 1960).
Within the Nevada Test Site is the closed town of Mercury, populated by employees of the Atomic Energy Commission. In the 1960’s the population had grown to over 10,000 residents. One of the rarest badges known.

VINTAGE: Circa 1960.

SIZE: Approximately 2-3/4” in height x 2-15/16” in width.

CONSTRUCTION: Gold-plated brass with hard fired multi-colored enamel and Nickel findings.

ATTACHMENT: Vertical kick pin with come-under locking catch.
