ARTIFACT:
Here we have a stunning example of a WWI US Air Service Bombing Military Aviator Wing made in a rarely seen Shirt (or overseas cap, or sweetheart) Size, which was purchased by our consignor directly at the Butterfield & Butterfield Auction of the Duncan Campbell Collection in 2009.
True to form, as with all of the wings in Duncan's Collection, the obverse of this wing was carefully polished to "bright" condition, as it would have been worn in 1918, and then lacquered to keep that "as new" luster. The back has a lovely gunmetal and rainbow patina from many decades of aging.
This is just a gorgeous sculpture of a wing. The wings and tail fins of he bomb are profusely hand-chased, while the bomb itself is left so smooth that it looks just like a miniature of an actual aerial bomb! A true work of art. In the classic Eisenstadt design, but unmarked as there is very little room on the back for any marks with the heavy vaulting of the wings and the connecting bars suspending the central bomb. It is hard to see, but the tip is indeed separately applied, in gold, and the US is also in gold, and the wing itself is in sterling silver, again, with lovely patina on the reverse.
