Description
What we have here is a fabulous example of the Iconic WWI US x000D
Air Service Bombing Military Aviator Wing. This wing was produced by the x000D
Eisenstadt Manufacturing Company of St. Louis Missouri for the J.J. (John x000D
Jasper) Sweeney Jewelry Company in Houston Texas. Instead of having the classic "E on the Square" Eisenstadt Maker Mark, The wing was marked at the factory x000D
with the JJ Sweeney "S in a Shield" Mark, since it was to be sold by that x000D
company. Sweeney also sold wings made for them by the Dunham Jewelry Manufacturing x000D
Company of San Antonio, Texas.
This Eisenstadt Made wing shows up more often with either x000D
the Eisenstadt Maker Mark, or no markings at all, more often than it shows up x000D
with the Sweeney mark, so this is an even more rare example of an already quite x000D
rare wing.
And this wing is in nearly perfect condition. This elegant, x000D
delicate, and LONG wing is notorious for being found with the tip of the right x000D
(as viewed) wing tweaked, from having been caught on a uniform sleeve, but this x000D
wing only has the slightest evidence of maybe having been SLIGHTLY tweaked x000D
once. Other than that, it is in a state of near perfect preservation, with some x000D
tiny remnants of silver polish here and there, and an overall gray-to-gunmetal x000D
patina on the obverse.
Although hard to see in the images, the wing has the 14K x000D
gold bomb tip and the US is also in gold.
This was a short-lived, later-war wing, but some Bombing x000D
Military Aviators did make it overseas and saw combat with the 96th x000D
Aero Squadron.
It would be hard to improve on this wing.
World War I.
