ARTIFACT: Huge, wonderful WWII War Worker "Ships for Victory" celluloid badge with Disney design from Fore River Shipyard in Braintree, Massachusetts. The Great Depression saw the loss of many jobs, but the Naval Act of 1938 brought increased shipbuilding to the nation with a mandate for a 20% increase in production as a means of strengthening the US Navy. Fore River opened in 1913 and was sold off in 1964, during WWII it grew from under 20,000 employees to over 30,000, which included 1,200 women (between 1941 - 43). The increase in production led to the expansion and building of the Bethlehem Hingham Shipyard. Fore River produced the USS Hancock (CV-19), USS Pasadena (CL-65), and USS Lexington (CV-16), and in total the yard built 92 vessels during the war, which earned them the Army-Navy "E" Award for excellence. The center of the pin features a Disney design showing a turtle on roller skates, wearing a cap, and carrying a steel plank and box labeled: "RUSH" against a red banner bearing a stripe of gold stars. The pin reads: "FORE RIVER" along the top and: "SHIPS FOR VICTORY" along the bottom.
