ARTIFACT: This is a fabulous United States Army Air Forces 81st Fighter Group, 14th Air Force silk scarf. Activated in February 1942 as the 81st Pursuit Squadron, the group was renamed the 81st Fighter Group three months later. The 81st began their service in North Africa as part of the 12th Air Force, being called to participate in Operation Torch. Initially flying P-39s, the 81st eventually transferred to India and then China, attached to the 15th Air Force, and switched to P-40 Warhawks and P-47 Thunderbolts. The scarf is in royal blue and was embroidered in China, with one end bearing the 81st insignia above the word MOTHER and the other end showing the Flying Tiger over the word CHINA.

VINTAGE: Circa World War II.

SIZE: Approximately 58" in length (including both 4" long fringes) by 14-1/34" in width.

MATERIALS / CONSTRUCTION: Silk, embroidery in silk/cotton threads.

ATTACHMENT: None.

MARKINGS: None.

CONDITION: 6+ (Fine-Very Fine): The scarf has several small areas of discoloration and a few very small holes and short runs of undone stitching at the edge.
