ARTIFACT: Stunning WWII United States Army Air Forces 23rd Fighter Group, 14th Air Force, Chinese-made, hand-embroidered jacket patch. Fully embroidered on linen with a silk backing. Exquisite detail on tiger. Patch came together with an Indian Made, WWII USAAF shirt size pilot wing and sterling early WWII USAAF "Issue" or "Graduation Wing". The 23rd was formed in China as a component of the China Air Task Force, the Group was involved in a great deal of the action over southeast and southwest Asia. It provided air defense for the Chinese and its operations extended beyond China to Burma, French Indochina, and Taiwan. The unit helped pioneer a number of innovative fighter and fighter-bomber tactics and was credited with destroying over 900 enemy planes during combat. Thirty-two pilots of the group achieved ace status by shooting down five or more enemy aircraft.
