Description

ARTIFACT:

This is an extremely rare World War II CNAC (Chinese National Aviation Corporation) pilot wing variation made in India. CNAC was an airline co-owned equally by Pan Am Airlines and the Chinese government. CNAC ran many missions for the The Chinese Air Force's American Volunteer Group (AKA The Flying Tigers) during the war, and many AVG members became CNAC employees after the AVG disbanded. The wing is beautifully made in solid silver with blue and red enameled details. The Chinese characters on the shield at the wing's center stand for the company's name. This is only the second of these wings I have seen made by this Calcutta maker: Phelps & Co., Ltd., 21 Old Court House Street. The wing has a unique Deco flair to the wing and the CNAC lettering. The enamel is perfect. It was listed as a Tailor & Haberdasher in "The Calcutta Key", a publication for US troops in the city in 1945.
