Description
Extremely rare and wonderful Model 1910 Bacon Can, the first pattern! The M1910 was made of unmarked, tinned iron, is rectangular shaped, and features a hinged lid. The tin was designed to carry a soldier's meat ration in the field however, the hinged lid did not prevent the grease from soiling the soldier's gear and personal items. It was quickly replaced in 1913 with a container designed with a friction-fit lid, which did not function well either. The year 1916 saw another, redesigned tin/can and this one (M1916) functioned great. It was in use during the Mexican border struggles, the WWI, and into the 1920's. US military gear collectors may know that the M1910 is extremely rare and in most instances exists only in the form of art, illustration, and period photographs. Many museum collections of Model 1910 US military gear are missing this great piece!
