Description

ARTIFACT:

This is an extremely rare circa 1919-1920 "Blue Book of Hayti (Haiti)" (Livre Bleu d'Haiti). The book is a history of the Caribbean island country, told from a government-approved point of view, as well as a Who's Who, including biographies and pictures of beauty contest winners. The volume has an abundance of photographs, and is written in both French and English, with the two translations in opposite columns on each page. The Blue Book dates from the presidency of Philippe Sudre Dartiguenave, the United States' preferred candidate for the administration of Haiti when their occupation of the Republic began in 191It is said that the suggestion to the Haitian National Assembly of Dartiguenave's "election" took place at the point of a United States Marine Corps bayonet. Many pages are devoted to the Haitian Gendarmerie, the new national force staffed by United States Marine Corps members. The book was printed by Klebold Press of New York City and contains some period advertisements, including one for the Panama Rail Road Steamship Line.
