ARTIFACT: This is a minty World War II Leather Flight Jacket Patch for the United States Army Air Forces 398th Bomb Group, 8th Air Force, which was made up of Bombardment Squadrons 600, 601, 602, & 60The 398th was active from March 1, 1943 until September 1, 1945 and flew B-17 bombers. The group participated in many maneuvers, including the D-Day Invasion and the attack on Derben, Germany. This patch is the identification logo for all squadrons of the 398th, known as "Hell from Heaven".
The patch was made in the first or second month of the unit's existence in the state of Washington. This type of patch, inked upon embossed leather, was made at one of the prisons in the state for Aviation units stationed in Washington state.
The patch for this unit is extremely rare, and we have only seen a couple examples in the last 4 decades

Circa early 1943.
SIZE:Approximately: 4-5/8" in height x 4" in width.

ATTACHMENT:To be sewn on.
