Description

ARTIFACT:

This is a circa 1953 member badge in sterling silver for the Greenbriar Hunting Club outside of Stuttgart, Arkansas. The hunt club is on acreage acquired at the close of World War II by businessman John M. Olin, who had purchased Winchester Repeating Arms Company during the Great Depression, and went on to run several other successful enterprises. He was also the owner of famed black Labrador retriever, "King Buck". The retreat became a favorite of famous people from Ted Williams to Clark Gable, all who shared a love of duck hunting. The artwork on the badge is by Richard E. Bishop. Trained to become an engineer, Bishop later became famous for his art prints, mostly avian in subject. He designed the third Federal Duck Stamp and won the Charles M. Lea prize for one of his prints.
