Description
What we have here is an extremely rare, early, Los Angeles California Police Badge. This is an unusual example of a Series 2 Police Badge made by Chipron Stamp Company of Los Angeles. This large star was made in nickel plated nickel, and has the early Chipron oval cartouche mark stamped clearly on the back. The badge has its original catch, but the original pin appears to have been broken during the period of wear, and replaced with part of an early safety pin, possibly by the officer himself based on the primitive appearance of the repair. This badge was probably produced in the latter part of the period of wear, circa 1900, and saw some good duty use. The letters and numbers were filled with "jeweler's black", a cheaper alternative to enameling, and most of that is still in place. The earlier examples of this badge that we've seen have been made in sterling silver, and we can find no reference to other examples of this badge made by Chipron. Truly an extremely rare variation of a rare and desirable badge.
