Description
This is an early United States Department of Defense breast badge by Meyer. The Department of Defense was created in 1947 to oversee the existing Department of War and the Department of the Navy. The badge shows an eagle with wings spread holding arrows in its talons and bearing a red, white and blue crest on its breast. Stars and leaves border the radiating pattern behind the eagle.
VINTAGE:Circa 1947.
SIZE:2" diameter.
CONSTRUCTION / MATERIALS:Sterling silver with gold plate, paint and enamel details.
ATTACHMENT:Three brass pins with clutch-back catches.
MARKINGS:STERLING and Meyer's shield-shaped maker's mark MEYER NEW YORK.
