This is a circa 1890s cap tally for the United States Coast and Geodetic Survey steamer, the USS Blake. Now called the NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration), the Geodetic Survey was established in 1807 as the first civilian scientific agency in the nation. The tally is black and reads U.S.S. BLAKE in gold thread.
VINTAGE:Circa 1890s.
SIZE:Approximately 1-1/2" wide and 36" long.
CONSTRUCTION / MATERIALS:Silk embroidered in gold tinsel threads.

CONDITION:8- (Very Fine-Excellent): Tally has some fraying at ends and light wear.
