ARTIFACT: Cased WWII Purple Heart awarded posthumously to Private Ralph E. Clark ASN: 31268213, for wounds received resulting in his death on November 12, 1943. Private Clark was born on July 30, 1923 in Berwick, Maine to Harold and Nina Clark. Records show he was living in Strafford County prior to his enlistment into the Army on March 22, 1943 in Manchester, New Hampshire. At the time of his enlistment, public record notes that he was Single with no dependents and working as a payroll clerk. Private Clark "Died of Wounds" (DOW) received during action in Italy and was awarded the Purple Heart for his great combat sacrifice. Originally buried in Italy, he was repatriated here on September 28, 1948 and now rests in the Evergreen Cemetery in Berwick, Maine. The reverse of the Purple Heart reads: "FOR MILITARY MERIT", "RALPH E. CLARK".

MATERIALS / CONSTRUCTION: Silk ribbon, enamel, gilt bronze

ATTACHMENT: Horizontal pin with drop in locking swivel catch

MARKINGS: None.

CONDITION: 8+ (Excellent): The medal shows minor wear, the case shows minor to moderate wear and slight separation near hinges (does not detract), overall excellent condition.
