Description
This is a circa 1930 Long Beach, California Special Police badge issued for use at the Belmont Heights Methodist Episcopal (B.H.M.E.) Church. The badge is shield-shaped with a cut-out star at its center. This is a Type 8 badge, and was worn by Long Beach patrolmen from about 1919 until 1924, and for even longer by members of the Special Police. Special Police officers were assigned to different locales occasionally requiring extra regulation, such as parks, banks, and in this case, churches. Due to the increased need for humanitarian services resulting from both the Great Depression and the Long Beach earthquake of 1933, this church and some others would have been granted an officer to regulate heightened traffic and activity. Belmont Height Methodist Episcopal Church was founded in 1914 and is still there over a century later.
