Description

ARTIFACT:

This is a beautiful early World War I (1915) bronze brooch sold by the French cavalry to raise funds for the war effort. The cross-shaped brooch shows a classical male figure at center representing the bold, strong French infantryman, choking the eagle (Germany). The brooch reads Journee du Poilu 1915 (Infantryman's Holiday). Poilu, which translates to "hairy one", became a popular term of endearment for the frequently bearded French infantrymen of WWI. The design of the brooch is by René Laligue.
