Description

ARTIFACT:

This is a beautiful souvenir plaque for the LZ 127 Graf Zeppelin around-the-world flight (weltflug) in August 192The trip was urged on by tycoon William Randolph Hearst, and the airship carried Lady Grace Drummond-Hay, a Hearst correspondent, making her the first woman to travel around the globe via air travel. The historic trip began and ended at Lakehurst Naval Air Station in New Jersey. The plaque is in lacquered cast iron and shows a zeppelin in relief flying over the Big Dipper. It is signed by Eberhard Encke, a popular Berlin artist.

Circa 1929.

SIZE:

Approximately 3-5/8" in height and 5-3/4" in length.

CONSTRUCTION / MATERIALS:

Lacquered cast iron.

Horizontal hanger.
