ARTIFACT:
This is a Beautiful, Extremely Rare (Only 6 Known) World War I United States Air Service Pilot Wing in Sterling & 14K. Most likely Made By Robbins.
Back around the late 80's, when I would see Duncan Campbell, the Father of Wing Collecting in the US, and the Author of the first book on the subject, regularly at the Allentown Show, I showed him one of these wings. It was my first WWI wing, and because it was not in his book, I was apprehensive. But the story was good where I found it, so I was hoping for the best.
Duncan loved it, and I was pleased to have found a wing that he had not seen before.
Moving ahead over the next 30 years, I have located 6 of these wings total, all in New England. The catch on this particular one, and other design aspects on all 6 (identical save for the open or locking catch) lead me to believe this was produced by Robbins, possibly for a jewelry store, especially since none have been marked beyond the occasional STERLING.
I always loved the large shield, and the highly convex wings, and the bold, bright very "Military" U.S. at center.
