Description

ARTIFACT:

This is a launching ribbon for the USS Capelin SS-289 from Portsmouth Naval Yard on January 20, 1943 and bears the slogan "Remember Pearl Harbor". The ships first war patrol, conducted in the Molucca, Flores, and Banda Seas between October and November 1943, found her sinking a 3,127-ton Japanese cargo ship on November 11th off Ambon Island. Eager for more success on their second war patrol in the same area led to disaster when the Capelin disappeared without a trace.
