ARTIFACT:

This is a circa 1930s (YMCA) Young Men's Christian Association "Swimmer" level swimming award lapel pin. The Association was started by a group of disillusioned young men in London in 1844 as a refuge from the social ills with which city life teemed. Nine years later the first American YMCA was set up at the old South Church in Boston, Massachusetts by a former sea captain. The pin shows a youth doing the crawl beneath the YMCA's triangle logo.
