ARTIFACT: This is a unique circa 1930 trench art 75 mm shell for VO-8M (Marine Observation Squadron 8). Originally Marine Observation Squadron One, VO-8M was reorganized July 1, 1927 while serving in Nicaragua, later becoming VMO-8. Engaging in the Battle of Ocotal, the new squadron made history as the first to carry out the first known (and successful) dive-bombing maneuver against an organized enemy. One side of the shell bears a huge Ace of Spades, the squadron's insignia, against a pebbly textured background. The plane above shows the squadron insignia clearly (photo credit: Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, Thomas O'Hara)

VINTAGE: Circa 1930.

SIZE: Approximately 13-13/16" in height and 3" in diameter.

MATERIALS / CONSTRUCTION: Brass.

ATTACHMENT: None.

MARKINGS: LOT 3 F.A. 75 MM.F.G.

ITEM NOTES: This is from a USMC trench art collection that we will be listing more of over the next few months. ebay VBGEX05 LHGEX11/13 SeIJEX10/15
