Description

ARTIFACT:

This is a circa 1918-1920 United States Navy pilot tunic of Ensign Robert E. Bering, Naval Aviator #200Little is known about Bering: a 1981 query (letter included) to the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations revealed only that he is documented as being an Ensign in the Naval Reserve. The tunic dates to 1918 and is in forest green with a beautiful circa 1920 pilot wing as well as bullion shoulder boards. It is in a smaller size (please see measurements below).

VINTAGE:

Circa 1918 (tunic) and 1920 (wing).

SIZE:

Tunic: approximately 19" from armpit to armpit; 27-1/2" length from collar to hem (on reverse); 25" from shoulder seam to cuff; 15" between shoulders; wing approximately 13/16" in height and 2-3/4" in width.

CONSTRUCTION / MATERIALS:

Wool, silk, brass; gilt brass; wool with bullion embroidery.

ATTACHMENT:

Jacket; buttons with hook and eye closures inside collar; wing: horizontal pin with tongue-style catch.

MARKINGS:

Label is rolled and hard to read: THIRD AVE. AT MARION STREET; wing is unmarked.

CONDITION:

7 (Very Fine): The jacket is in great overall condition with some moth holes here and there; lining at collar is partially separated from seam; very small spot of discoloration on left top pocket.
