Description

ARTIFACT:

1910's - 1920's Portland Gas Light Co. employee badge from Portland, Maine. The company was in operation from 1852 until the arrival of the interstate natural gas pipeline in 196During operation, the company employed hundreds of workers with a variety of positions from maintaining supply to the city's street lamps to residential stoves, hot water and gas heaters. As a result of the new interstate pipeline, Portland and Lewiston Gas Companies merged together in 1966 forming Northern Utilities, now owned and operated by Unitil. The oval badge features the number "38" in the center and surrounding it reads: "PORTLAND GAS LIGHT CO."
