Description
This is a photograph of a New York City policeman who served in the 1890s. It is an oval-shaped 3/4 view of him mounted on a black matting. The policeman, whom handwriting on the reverse of the photograph identifies as Walter W. Evans, is dressed in uniform and wearing a "potsey" badge. The term potsey comes from a Victorian-era children's sidewalk game of the same name in which metal pieces were used. The pieces had much the same shape as the squarish police badges then in use.
