Description

ARTIFACT:

This is a circa World War II Filipino Itak ("chopper") edged weapon from the central Tagalog region of the Philippines. The weapon is accompanied by its wonderfully decorated scabbard, which shows deeply carved flowers along one side. Beveled on one side and flat on the other, the blade tapers to a lethal tip after a long curve. The wooden handle is thick and slightly knob-like with carved scrolling details. This type of weapon was first used as a utilitarian tool by the Tagalog, but was eventually adopted for hand-to-hand combat and self-defense.

VINTAGE:

Circa World War II.

SIZE:

Weapon: approximately 17-1/4" in length and 2" in width; scabbard: approximately 14-3/8" in length and 1-3/4" in width; blade only: approximately 12-15/16" in length and 1-1/4" in width.

CONSTRUCTION / MATERIALS:

Steel, wood, bark, twine.

ATTACHMENT:

Twine tied to scabbard.
