Description

ARTIFACT:

Nice, coin silver and gold filled soldier souvenir ring from Manila in the islands of the Philippines. In 1945, the Battle of Manila known today as the one of the first and most fierce experiences of urban fighting in the Pacific Theater. The battle against grip of the Imperial Japanese Army resulted in total devastation. The 37th Division managed to free nearly 1,000 prisoners of war abandoned by the Japanese. The city lost many government buildings and culturally relevant historical artifacts, as well as many lives. It is remembered today as a national tragedy and in February of 1995 the Shrine of Freedom was built and dedicated to the memory of those who fought and lost during the Battle.
