ARTIFACT: This is a very rare Italian-made United States Army Air Forces 449th Bomb Group, 15th Air Force distinctive insignia from World War II. The 449th was activated May 1, 1943, and after training transferred to Europe and operated out of Grottaglie Field, outside of Taranto, Italy. They flew B-24s and earned two Distinguished Unit Citations. The DI is in wool and shows a winged horse in gold bullion and a bomb in silver bullion.

VINTAGE: Circa World War II.

SIZE: Approximately 1-1/2" in height x 1-3/16" in width.

MATERIALS / CONSTRUCTION: Wool felt embroidered in bullion thread.

ATTACHMENT: To be sewn onto uniform.

MARKINGS: None.

ITEM NOTES: This is from a United States Army Air Forces collection which we will be listing more of over the next few months. VCJJX12 LFFJX11/12 SFJJX05/27/24

CONDITION: 7 (Very Fine): The insignia has some light wear to medium wear and tarnishing.
