Description
A Full Sheriff Badge from the 1920's from just about anywhere in the US is a great, historic, Artifact to begin with. And what we have here is a beautiful Gold Filled example with hard fired black enamel made by the Wendell & Company firm of Chicago and New York. The obverse of the badge reads SHERIFF and WARREN CO. PENN. Engraved on the reverse is the Sheriff's name and his date of appointment: George W. Grosch 1-7-2But Warren County Pennsylvania has long been a hotbed of Ku Klux Klan activity, especially in the early 1920s to the mid 1930s, so to show his associations, at least clandestinely, engraved around the very center of the star on the reverse of Sheriff Grosch's badge is the well known KKK code: AKIA, which stands for: A Klansman I Am. We have never seen anything else quite like this unique piece of American History.
