ARTIFACT:
Super cool, vintage mid-1960's Republic F-105 Thunderchief large aluminum factory model. The model displays USAF lettering and symbols on the wings, the nose reads: "U.S. AIR FORCE FH-105", and the tail: "40105". The supersonic fighter-bomber model is mounted to look as if it is soaring through the air with one wing tilted up and shows a painted cockpit. The stand features a maker's plate that reads: "REPUBLIC F-105 THUNDERCHIEF". During the Vietnam War, the F-105 was the primary attack aircraft used. It was initially designed to carry nuclear bombs internally and could carry nearly twice as much payload as a WWII B-17 Flying Fortress or B-24 Liberator. It was designed as a low-altitude aircraft with a large payload capacity – in fact, it is the largest single seat, single engine combat aircraft made. During the Vietnam War, it was credited with downing 27 planes and was part of Operation Rolling Thunder and combat at Thanh Hoa Bridge. The two-seat version of the F-105 was extensively used in Suppression of Enemy Air Defenses (SEAD), tasked with identifying and destroying surface-to-air missiles. After the War ended, an F-105 was constructed from 10 other F-105's that were used in combat during Vietnam and serves as a memorial in US Air Force Academy honoring all the graduates who served in the Vietnam War. After the dedication ceremony, Lieutenant Colonel Matthews, the flight leader, returned after the planned formation and performed a single-file pass during which the F-105 exceeded the speed of sound while flying lower than 100 feet!
